Artist's Biography/Statement
Susan is an interdisciplinary artist who has exhibited both nationally and internationally. In addition, she has taught art through various institutions and settings. She has a B.A. in History of Art, a B.F.A. in Graphic Design, an M.A. in Art Education, and an MFA in Studio Art. She was a member of The Plowhaus Cooperative in East Nashville and exhibited with the group from 2006 to 2012. She also exhibited on occasions with the Nashville Untitled group from 2002 to 2012. Her work has been shown at a number of other galleries as well. Central to her work is the relationship between thinking practices and art making practices in which she explores various materials and ideas to create a vibrant interactive situation between the audience and the art work. Susan Striepe's current body of work explores the concept of the posthuman and the anthropocene.
"I have an experimental and interdisciplinary approach to art that is flavored with contingency. I am interested in possibilities and uncertainties. I am never sure that we human beings really understand reality. I do believe that we think we do in the moment. I also see how our views of reality shift over time and between cultures. The fluidity between time and place that make a space we believe in temporarily. I like to play with these perceived interludes of certainty sometimes by including observations of the natural world and then seeking out patterns for amplification, abstraction, or hybridization. I am interested in how artists can use perception and imagination to communicate new ways of seeing the world—where we are and where we might be in the future. The importance of the natural world has become paramount as we are losing species in what is now the sixth great extinction. I am interested in how artists can raise awareness and bring back appreciation for the splendor, as well as a feeling of interconnectedness with our natural world."
